Консорциум FSTC разработал "язык разметки финансовых услуг" FSML, определяющий компоненты структуризированных электронных документов, предназначенных для финансовых расчетов. Этот язык выделяет множество компонентов финансовых электронных документов, метки этих документов, их семантику и требования к обработке. FSML был создан в ходе разработки средств аутентификации финансовых документов и обнаружения внесенных в них неразрешенных изменений.
Для решения этой проблемы был избран метод создания обобщенной универсальной структуры, обработки и обнаружения электронных документов, названных "подписанными". Консорциум подготовил "язык разметки подписанных документов" SDML, который является обобщением языка FSML. Структура SDML поддерживает операции, выполняемые с бумажными финансовыми документами, включая подпись, заверение подписей, присоединение приложений (например, ордеров, счетов). Язык SDML предусматривает также применение цифровых подписей, криптографии с ключами секретности. Идеи SDML использованы при создании расширенного языка разметки XML.
